A New Model of Phenol Biodegradation and Activated Sludge Growth in Fedbatch Cultures
نویسندگان
چکیده
Phenol biodegradation using acclimated activated sludge was investigated in batch and fedbatch cultures with variable initial concentrations of phenol and biomass. The batch experimental data show a cell growth after phenol exhaustion, making the use of a conventional Haldane model, for which specific growth rate μ = 0 when substrate S = 0, inadequate to describe biomass growth profiles. On the other hand, the fedbatch experiments have shown enhanced inhibitory effects on phenol degradation when compared to batch cultures. Both phenomena were attributed to the metabolic intermediates accumulation and to their later consumption during phenol degradation. Consequently, a new Haldane-based model that explicitly integrates the kinetic evolution of a main intermediate was designed. The model allowed accurate predictions of both phenol and biomass concentration courses in both operating modes over a wide range of initial conditions.

Mutation of Candida tropicalis by irradiation with a He-Ne laser to increase its ability to degrade phenol.
Candida tropicalis isolated from acclimated activated sludge was used in this study. Cell suspensions with 5 x 10(7) cells ml(-1) were irradiated by using a He-Ne laser. After mutagenesis, the irradiated cell suspension was diluted and plated on yeast extract-peptone-dextrose (YEPD) medium. Plates with approximately 20 individual colonies were selected, and all individual colonies were harveste...

متن کاملAdsorption of Phenolic Compounds onto the Activated Carbon Synthesized from Pulp and Paper Mill Sludge: Equilibrium Isotherm, Kinetics, Thermodynamics and Mechanism Studies
A new activated carbon was produced from pulp and paper mill sludge as a low cost precursor via chemical activation by zinc chloride. The activated carbon was successfully used for the adsorption of phenol and two of its derivatives, i.e. 2-chlorophenol and 4-nitrophenol from aqueous solutions. The characterization of the prepared activated carbon demonstrated high textural properties for the s...

Biodegradation of phenol in the presence of glucose as a supplementary substrate was investigated with mixed microbial consortium isolated from waste effluent of coke-steel factory. Batch experiments were carried out at room temperature and pH value of 7. Initial phenol and glucose concentrations were in the range of 25-1000 mg/l and 500-3000 mg/l, respectively. In a dual substrates system the ...

Activated sludge obtained from a municipal wastewater treatment plant was acclimated to methylene chloride at concentrations between 1 and 100 mg/liter by continuous exposure to the compound for 9 to 11 days. Acclimated cultures were shown to mineralize methylene chloride to carbon dioxide and chloride. Rates of methylene chloride degradation were 0.14, 2.3, and 7.4 mg of CH2Cl2 consumed per h ...
